Elaine Thompson Obituary

Celebrating The Life of Our Matriarch

Elaine Marie Thompson, affectionately known as “Granny” to most, was born on August 22, 1951 to Nathaniel Thompson and Johnnie Mae Walker, both of who preceded her in death. She was raised by her mother at heart, Lily Ruth Thompson in Memphis, Tennessee until the young age of 18 when she moved to Chicago. She was the third oldest of ten children. Elaine received the Lord Jesus Christ at an early age and exhibited her faith through her good works in life.

Elaine received her formal education at Caldwell Elementary School and Manassas High School. She made a career in the hospitality industry serving  as the Housekeeping Supervisor at Warren Barr Pavilion and then retiring after 16 years.

Elaine was a diva that kept her hair, nails and feet done. She believed she needed a new outfit to go anywhere and do anything. She had rings, necklaces, and all kinds of jewelry for different outfits. AND she loved to take pictures so basically, you had to look your best around her because she was taking a picture no matter how ugly you thought you looked that day. Elaine didn’t believe in “ugly pictures” though. She was a hostess extraordinaire and the life of any party. After a glass of vodka with cranberry juice and a joint, she would have everyone laughing. She was witty and loved making jokes. Granny also loved music. Her favorites were The Temptations, Smokey Robinson and Rihanna. There was never a dull moment with Elaine.

Granny was also a PHENOMENAL cook. She was the Rihanna of cooks. Elaine was from Memphis and like many people from the South, the kitchen was both literally and figuratively the center of her home. She cooked everyday for her household and Sunday dinners were a staple in her family. And if there was a family gathering, her most requested dish was potato salad. If you know, you know. Which everyone should because if you were in her home, she made sure you ate. And she wouldn’t take no for an answer. Elaine was very caring and wanted everyone who entered her home to feel like family. She had such an inviting soul that her house often became a second home to many people.

Unfortunately, Elaine lost her life due to kidney failure.  She leaves to mourn her memories: her brothers and sisters; Nathaniel, Andrew, and Denise all of who preceded her in death, David, Danny, James, Sonny, Louise, and Sherelda, her children; Tonia, Andre, Laquita (Allan), Jason, Dionta, Dejaujhn and two daughters at heart; Xaveria and Tamika, her grandchildren; Jonathan and Antonio both of who preceded her in death, Martell, Sierra, Shana, Bree, Devon, Davion, Antonya, Diontasia, Karhaunie and two granddaughters at heart; Tamiekca and Shelby, her best friends; Alice, Arties, Catherine, Demetria, Jamie, John, Joyce, Shirley and Tommy. She also leaves her special niece and nephews; Nathaniel III who preceded her in death, Shalonda and Kyle along with a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins, and twenty-four great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly.
