Devata Wallace of Chicago, Illinois, peacefully passed away on October 8, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on June 22, 1928, in Tallahassee, Mississippi, to the late Mary Harris and Henderson Harris. Devata lived a life full of love, faith, and dedication to her family and community.
Devata was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Henderson Harris, her husband Ira Wallace, her children Mary McCarter, Johnny Jr., Hazel Wallace, and Ira Wallace, her granddaughter Jeannetta McCarter, and her siblings Willie Mae Pickens, Nathaniel Harris, Joe Harris and Ulysses Harris.
She is survived by her 7 children: Sammie, Mattie, Lurene, Rosie, Naomi, Ivy, and Ben; A special niece/daughter: Yvette. 18 grandchildren: Vicky, Paul, Latrice, Katherine, Luvenia, Andre, Shiquita, Lakiesha, Kevin, Natasha, Edgar, Mitchell, Tameanica, Dreamer, Kiwana, Gregory, Jeannetta Shunta; 35 great-grandchildren, and 29 great-great-grandchildren. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins among other relatives and friends. A special friend/“sister”, Peaches.
Devata dedicated her life to serving others. She worked diligently in environment service at Mark Twain Hotel and later Victor Dana, retiring after years of service. Even in retirement, her nurturing spirit continued as she lovingly babysat for three families. She had a deep love for listening to gospel music, attending Mt. Vernon Baptist Church faithfully under the leadership of Reverend Johnny Miller, and filling her home with warmth through her cooking and baking for family and friends.
Her family and friends will always remember Devata’s kindness, her unwavering faith, her gentle guidance, and the joy she brought into every life she touched.
