Mrs. Bessie Lee Miller was born on September 9, 1942, in Swan Lake, Mississippi, to the late Oscar Rainey
and Tocea Jackson. She was the youngest and only surviving sibling of six children; brothers, Shelby Jackson,
Johnny (Victoria) Rainey, William Rainey and sisters Modie Lee Carter and Henrietta Rainey, all preceded
her in death.
Bessie received formal education at Hess Upper-Grade Center and Farragut High School. Shortly after high
school, she acquired a job at Old World Bakery where she met and soon married her husband Andy. After
baring her first three children she began her career in the airport food service industry, Sky Chef, where she
worked for more than 30 years before retiring in 1998. Bessie not only worked at Sky Chef’s but also served
in the self-appointed role of a recruiter. She helped several people gain employment.
On January 4, 1964, Bessie united in holy matrimony with her soul mate Andy Miller. To this union, five
children were born. Bernadette, Bonita, Marshia, Tasha, and Anthony. Bessie and Jack demonstrated the
greatest sacrifice of love when they adopted their great nieces, Bridgette and Sherita Carter. They worked
hard to acquire a big home for their large family that they filled with great laughter, love, and prosperity.
Bessie accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She was a faithful member of Jordan
Temple Church under the leadership of Pastor Stephen Richardson until her health began to fail. She
remained a member of record until she made her transition.
Bessie was known for her household cleanliness and her overall jazzy style. She was continually remodeling
her home. She was aesthetically passionate about creating a clean, welcoming environment adorned with
the latest household trends.
Bessie was excited to take on the title and role of grandmother. From the moment her first grandchild was
born, she committed herself to make sure they had all the “apple pie” benefits of grandma. She made
customized Easter Baskets every year, celebrated holidays, attended graduations, birthday parties, and all
other relevant events. She enjoyed a strong and close bond with all her grandchildren.
Bessie never met a stranger. She embraced many people throughout her life. She opened her home, pockets,
and cupboard to anyone in need. It was never too early or too late to stop by. Not only would she alter her
schedule to entertain you, but she would also prepare you a meal. One would leave a little wiser, a little
stronger and a lot better. Because of her generous spirit, pleasant personality, and unconditional support,
she was loved and respected by all.
Bessie was indeed an angel on earth. Her joy and influence will live in our hearts forever.
On Wednesday, June 17, 2020, Bessie answered the call to be with the Lord. She laid down her cross and
quietly slipped away.
Bessie was preceded in death by her husband, Andy Miller, daughters, Bonita Stokes and Marshia Miller,
