Mattie Woods, affectionately known as Mattie5, was an exceptional woman whose presence will be greatly missed. She transitioned on April 15, 2025, at the age of 84.
Born on September 6, 1940, in McLain, Mississippi, she was the daughter of the late Essie Griffin and Will Brown. Mattie attended McLain High School and, at the age of 16, moved to Chicago, where she established herself. Her professional journey included 9 years at St. Anne’s Hospital and over 30 years as a teacher’s aide at William Penn Elementary. In addition, she was a successful business owner and real estate investor.
Mattie is preceded in death by her mother Essie Griffin, father Will Brown, sister, Rosie Simmons; sister, Shirley Bolton, sister Ruth Marshall, brother Luther Keyes; son, Anthony Bolton, daughter, Darlene Bolton, daughter Demetrice Bolton, son Carseniga Bolton, granddaughter Keisha Bolton, and great-grandson O’Miris Hughes.
She is survived by her beloved husband Robert Woods, son Creative Scott (Alexis Scott) , brothers Percy Griffin, Edward Griffin, and Jimmie Marshall (Margaret Marshall), sisters Emma Griffin, Gloria Marshall, and Mary Marshall, as well as a multitude of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Mattie exemplified leadership and wisdom as the matriarch of her family. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
