Ms. Brenda Simmons - Bolden

Our beloved Brenda Yvonne Bolden was born in St, Louis Missouri on October 8,
1943 to Julia McKenzie and James Simmons. She was the second child of eight
children and little did they know a leader was born. Her parents, Julia McKenzie
and James Simmons both preceded her in death. Brenda married Eddie Jones
Bolden who preceded her in death.
Brenda attended Gillespie Elementary School and completed her secondary
education at Wendell Phillips High School. She also attended Business School.
Brenda indulged in ballet at a young age. She was a Majorette where she became a
part of the Bud Billiken Parade.
Brenda accepted Christ under the leadership of Rev. James Walker of International
Church of Prayer, and after his transition, she was under the leadership of Rev.
Darrell Anderson Sr. and she remained there for years. Brenda was led by the spirit
to join her daughters and granddaughters’ to become a member of Sunrise Baptist
Church under the leadership of Pastor Jimmie E. Storey.
Brenda cherished family life. She was a devoted mother of 4 beautiful children and
relished in spending time with her grandkids. Brenda was very serious when it
came to her kids and she worked hard to provide for her family. Family was
everything to her and she adored her children, grandchildren, and great-
grandchildren. Brenda was the one who went to see about any family member
during their difficult times. Brenda was a lady who carried perseverance well.
Brenda loved working in the community. She was known for being a community
activist for Chicago Public Housing. Brenda was a trailblazer and very out spoken.
Brenda spoke to people in the community about “changing their mind in order to change their life.
