Latonia Tate, affectionately known as “Poochie,” was born on October 20, 1961, in Chicago, Illinois, to Mary Alice Tate and Clint Peterson both of whom preceded her in death. Poochie was raised on the west side of Chicago in the Garfield Park neighborhood, where she attended Beidler Elementary School and Morton Academy.
She later went on to work at FAREVA in Morton Grove, Illinois—a job that brought her a great sense of pride and accomplishment. It was there she met Andrea Hister, who entered her life as a coworker and quickly became family. Thank you, Andrea, for your unwavering love and support.
Poochie had a magnetic spirit, an infectious smile, and a personality that could light up any room. And if you ever found yourself alone with her, you already knew—she was going to ask for a couple dollars. Whether you gave in or not, it didn’t matter—because in her famous words, “It is what it is.”
Poochie departed this life on 05/14/2025 we would like to
imagine there’s a family reunion in Heaven right now, as Poochie rejoins her beloved siblings Mable Jean Tate Buck, Sabrina Tate O’Quinn, and Johnny Tate; her best friend, Lee Esther “Chocolate” Jones; and her son, Kenny Tate.
Poochie accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age, a faith she carried throughout her life.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories in her children: daughters Lativa (Girly-Tabari) Kenyada,Mable, and Latonia; her goddaughter, Tamara Jones; and sons Johnny and Dewaun . Her memory also lives on through her grandchildren Dominique-James,Destiny, Maurice,Zaniya, Zach, AJ, and Jude; her great-grandchildren Jayceon and Ja’Siyah; and a host of family Tate,Bryant,Wilson,Pryor and friends who will forever miss her light.
Poochie’s life was one filled with laughter, love, and strength. Though our hearts are heavy, we celebrate the joy she brought into our lives. Long live Poochie
